The National Taxi Lekgotla

The National Taxi Lekgotla takes place at the backdrop of the October Transport Month, a period where the transport sector showcases its achievements and how it will continue to transform the lives of ordinary people through investments in transport infrastructure.

The C-BRTA was part of the three day Taxi Lekgotla that took place on 29 -31 October 2020 at the Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg. The lekgotla was attended by delegates representing the taxi industry and all its subsectors, government and various organs of civil society with the aim of finding solutions to challenges facing the taxi industry and to formalise them.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula who attended the lekgotla virtually stated that the taxi industry is therefore one of the most important sectors in our economy,  “the vast majority of public transport commuters use taxis followed by buses and trains. The industry is a major source of business creation with approximately 150,000 taxi business owners in operation, It is a major employer of around 300,000 drivers and 100,000 rank marshals. From this lekgotla, we need to come up with concrete measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of this important industry”.

The Lekgotla drew to a close with the industry adopting resolutions relating to combatting violence as well as embracing labour legislation. The Minister promised to appoint a panel to look at the modalities of the unified taxi industry, including finding solutions of how sub-sectors will work within the confines of a single industry body.
