C-BRTA Staff Commemorate World AIDS Day

On December the 1st staff commemorated World Aids Day that started with an uplifting message on the importance of this day. Founded in 1988, World Aids Day offers an opportunity to unit and fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS related illness. C-BRTA staff followed in this tradition by commemorating World AIDS Day. The Theme for this year is “Let Our Actions Count: It Is My Right To Know My Status, Prevention Is My Responsibility”. The theme encourages us to make our actions count and take personal and collective responsibility to prevent new HIV and TB infections in South Africa.
Over the past 20 years South Africa has taken strides in its quest to turn the HIV, AIDS and TB epidemics around and this is notable by the number of persons receiving antiretroviral treatment and the benefits of treatment as prevention and progress towards a cure and vaccine. There are 4.2 million people who are in treatment and 7.1 million people who are HIV positive.
However despite these advances However despite these advances, stigma and discrimination still persist for many people living with, or affected by HIV. World AIDS Day is an opportunity for all South Africans to remind themselves that HIV is still a reality and that it is incumbent on all of us to continue fighting prejudice, stigma and discrimination.
