Freedom Day 2021

Freedom Day is the commemoration of the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994.

The theme for 2021  is “The Year of Charlotte Maxeke: the Meaning of Freedom under COVID-19”.

This year’s Freedom Day will be celebrated very differently in South Africa, in an environment where the country is still faced with the COVID-19 pandemic. The day which has traditionally been marked by celebrations and memories of freedom, will be celebrated at home due to COVID -19 restrictions.

Let us all use the 27 April for reflecting, being responsible and staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and ponder on the progress we have made as a country in moving South Africa forward.

“To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” – Nelson Mandela
